A calm dog. the shar-pei retains a slight air of mystery about it. And although it has an independent spirit, it is totally devoted to its owners. The shar-pei may have been bred as a fighting dog at one time but nevertheless has a very calm temperament and responsible manner.
An adaptable dog
Because it is extremely attached to its home, the shar-pei will not run away and will guard the house conscientiously and professionally. This dog will do as well in towns as in country; in the country it exercises to the maximum, while in the town, the dog will adapt to its owner's pace. Adaptability is the word that most readily springs to mind when describing the shar-pei character.
A quiet and easy companion to live with. Although not expensive to keep, this dog is very costly to buy.
Living space
Like most dogs, the shar-pei is happier living in the house with a garden, but accepts life in a flat with equanimity. This dog is extremely well-behaved and knows how to make its large bulk inconspicuous. It will, however, watch whatever you are doing with a dignified air. A shar-pei is not a nervous dog and will lie quietly with its large, creased, thoughful face resting on its paws. Another advantage is that this dog does not moult. At the signal for a walk, however, it will leap into action, jumping up enthusiastically to fecth its lead. This dog adores walks, of course, and needs plenty of them.
